Brief
The client wanted a house that turned its back to the road. The plot is long and narrow, with a busy street on one side and an old orchard on the other.
Approach
We gave the street a 40-metre wall and set the house behind it under one long roof. Every room faces the orchard. The wall holds the entrance, the bins and the bikes, so the garden side stays quiet.
Materials
Hand-tooled granite for the wall, oiled pine for the roof structure and the window frames, and a polished concrete floor that runs from the hall out to the terrace.
