Brief
The city asked for a reading room on the old harbour wall: a library for twenty thousand books, a study room and a place to sit out of the sun.
Approach
We proposed a building made of its own shelving. A timber and steel frame carries the books, the stair and the reading tables, and the walls between are glass.
Materials
Bamboo-faced shelving on a galvanised steel frame, a terrazzo floor and pale stone from the harbour quarry for the plinth. The entry was shortlisted.
